Insurrection in Washington.

The 25th must be invoked by the cabinet.

The events that transpired yesterday were the logical conclusion of the last few years. Every single Republican who enabled this for four years is complicit, and holds responsibility for what happened in the US capitol. Trump is no fascist, but fascists support him, this is the most fascistic development of his tenure.

The confederate flag flew at the heart of the US government. The police and security services let these people do things that would have seen BLM protestors roughed up, or event shot on sight. The whole event was tinged with white supremacy, and the eventual end point of minority rule being overcome by the majority.

The shocking thing? A plurality of Republican voters support this. Biden has been confirmed, Biden will be the President, but this is no fringe aberration, this is a significant minority of Trump’s support, and the revival of a militant far right that continues to act with impunity.

Mr Trump must be rapidly impeached to prevent him holding public office ever again, or he must be removed by the cabinet, making Mike Pence, someone who rolled procedures to the letter on the day, but enabled this for years, Acting President until Biden is sworn in. Trump asked for this, this is his mess to own, and will be remembered as a uniquely dark point in US history.

Save me the tears about democracy, the US has funded these efforts in other nations for decades, and is one of the most autocratic, antidemocratic nations around. It’s a glorified kleptocracy ruled over by the far right, Christian fundamentalists, and neoliberal elite’s economic interests.

America is now a laughing stock, and it deserves to be. A nation that allows this, but attacks peaceful protestors fighting for racial justice, is a nation far, far from moral. The procedure worked, but democracy has been destroyed. Now only one party, and part of the citizenry, believe in democracy.
