NEC results 2020, reaction.
These results look good for the left. As I said yesterday, however Labour members voted here, Starmer still has a majority no matter what. But, the Grassroots Voice slate has done better than expected, and picked up a strong mandate from members to represent aspirational, radical, socialist policies within the party.
I’m confident the left slate what given a big boost following the suspension of Jeremy Corbyn, and Starmer’s string of actions hostile to the left. Decreased turnout is a worrying sign, but the results themselves tell Keir Starmer that Labour members want unity; but they also want him to remain committed to the progressive platform he stood on.
What difference can this make? It’s a wake up call. It shows the left isn’t dead in the water, and can still organise for concessions within the Labour party, in exchange for party unity. There needs to be a far more vocal, media orientated, and united front. Like the ERG was for Theresa May, the SCG should be for Keir Starmer.
Please remain in the party. The party has those seeds of radicalism within it, and it’s the only party under the present voting system with any chance of forming a government that implements socialist policies. There’s no ifs, and no buts there. I understand the problems with this leadership, I understand the anger, but I’m simply here to tell you Labour is the only party we can push our priorities (with any credible result for our efforts) in.
Congratulations to those brilliant socialists on the left slate who now go to represent us in those meetings on the NEC. I reiterate: those voices being in the room is immensely valuable; they aren’t going to get rid of us easily, this isn’t Kinnock 2.0 no matter how much some in Starmer’s circle want it to be. Momentum is here to stay, and the left is here to stay. We are the people and the views this party was built for, not the neoliberal, welfare slashing, authoritarian, corporate Europhiles.
Solidarity, stay in the Labour party and vote in those key elections when they next come around, and work to make that better future a tangible reality.
