Tories to stop funding overseas fossil fuel projects.

Good news that the Tories are getting (slightly) more serious on climate change.

If you ever wanted proof that activism and mobilisation works, then see the current Tory party’s climate agenda. Finally, the Johnson government has committed to ending funding of overseas fossil fuel projects, a glaring case of hypocrisy previously, and that goes on top of the ambitious emission reduction targets now set in motion. It has become apparent (surprise surprise) pressure from below is needed because it WORKS, we have to shame these people into action.

Now is the time to move beyond setting targets and invest in the hard slog; new sums, mass sums of cash injected, not the repurposing and piecemeal actions that don’t match up to the govt rhetoric. It’s a win win win for the govt if they take action, so let’s see these ideas put into practise, because we know there are people within the govt that genuinely care about this stuff, and the rest are opportunists that will jump on board so long as it’s politically beneficial, which it is.

The world is in dire straights and we remain on the path towards planetary destruction, but these things can and must be addressed, surrender or hopelessness is not an option on the table here. Antipathy is complicity when it comes to saving the planet.

This govt is going further and faster than prior British governments, which is undeniably a good thing and also to be expected, considering it’s 2020. But it’s nowhere near enough, not even a start.

Post-Brexit, Britain must utilise its soft power to fight for, and support, efforts to tackle climate change. We must aid poorer countries to decarbonise without hurting their economies or standards of life, we must use our new commitments to persuade fellow nations to act, as seems to be Dominic Raab’s intention.
Britain’s decarbonisation won’t save the planet, but Britain’s waning influence, if utilised correctly, can aid the process, but only if we set the example to follow.
