Why is the Brexit Party backing FSMs?

Nigel Farage’s failed hard right party is again wading into politics, with a strange intervention.

So the Brexit Party is saying things again; and from a look at the stuff they’re putting out they’re aggressively opposing any lockdowns, and (what has brought them back to people’s attention) advocating the government provides kids with free school meals during a half term; a perfectly noble thing to advocate, and something I, and most of us agree on. This is strange, however, for a multitude of reasons.

A point (and obvious one) made by many people before I write this is as follows: the party is worried about kids in poverty but absolutely fine with rampant racism, libertarian economic policy, and the rhetoric of the hard right? None of the above help kids in poverty.

Another bizarre thing is the fact the often older, working class voters the Brexit Party could have a niche with are the very people who are likely to be in the minority opposed to FSMs being extended, and indulging in the rhetoric of personal responsibility. So politically I doubt it’ll gain them much traction.

What is it, nakedly, is a political stunt. It’s peak Nigel Farage: utterly desperate for attention and wounded by the lack of relevance, the party now howls at the political winds that are blowing against them, what with Brexit almost done, a hard right Tory govt stealing their clothes, and a Labour party that isn’t seen as the “enemies of the people” in a culture war just yet. Nigel Farage should give up and retire.
